Impressed with the way the Doctor, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter live out Jesus’ teaching, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”?

Intrigued by the themes of mercy, forgiveness and redemption in Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and the television series Angel?

Inspired to do good and resist evil by the example of Peter Parker, the crew of Serenity and the Winchester brothers?

Come worship God in the company of Buffy, Harry Potter and Spider-Man.

(You’re welcome to come in a costume of your choice, but blasters, stakes and other weapons will have to be left at the church door.)

  1. I just discovered your perspective on this through online articles. What a wonderful synthesis and engagement of pop culture which rings true with my own. You might also be interested in a new book edited by A. David Lewis and Christine Hoff Kraemer titled Graven Images: Religion in Comic Books and Graphic Novels (Continuum, 2010). I explore comics as well as other aspects of religion and the fantastic in pop culture at my blog TheoFantastique (www.theofantastique.com).

  2. Was this just a one-off event? Because someone told me it was weekly and I’d be interested in coming along and hearing some of the theories. I’m a Doctor Who, Harry Potter nut and I’m religious, however I find myself having many beliefs that cross with the ideas of these themes.

    • This was a one-off, but I’m thinking that it might have to become an annual event. If so, I’ll try and advertise it widely next year, but I suspect it won’t get the media coverage it did this year. I could email you in about twelve month’s time?

  4. After all, the Church itself is about myths and men with supernatural powers and unusual abilities.
All the fictions are just another story to tell. Yes, just like the Church does.
